Informational Guide to Bilbao Airport (BIO) - Non Official

Bilbao Airport Car Hire

Hiring a car in Bilbao Airport is a good idea to move around Bilbao and its surrounding areas.

Booking online is more economic and availability is limited at the Airport. We always recommend to book your car in advanced. Also, you can choose from a wide range of car types: from economy cars, to SUVs and minivans.

Passengers will find the popular companies: Avis, Budget, Alamo, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Thrifty, among others. And some local companies too.

Six car rental companies operate at Bilbao Airport, all located in the lobby of the Parking P1 Building on floor 0, which is connected to the passenger terminal (floor 0) via a 100-meter underground gallery.

Rent Your Car at Bilbao Airport (BIO)

All the car rental companies at the airport offer a wide variety of vehicles, catering to different needs and rental periods. Additionally, you can return your car at any convenient drop-off point. If you’ve rented a car from another office in Bilbao, you can also return it at any of the airport’s rental locations.

Car Rental Parking

Bilbao Airport has a designated car rental parking area for vehicle drop-off and pick-up, located near the passenger terminal. This parking is free of charge. However, vehicles parked in these spaces without the proper permit will be towed, and the owner will be required to pay the towing fee.

Car Rental Conditions

The requirements for renting a car in Spain can vary depending on the type of vehicle you wish to rent. Below are the general conditions that most car rental companies follow:

  1. Minimum Driver Age: 21 years old (although some companies may require the driver to have held their driving license for at least 1 year).
  2. Spanish drivers must present a valid driving license, without serious violations.
  3. Foreign drivers can present an international driving license (as long as it is valid in Spain) and it must be up-to-date.
  4. Personal identification (ID card or passport) and a valid payment method, usually a credit card, are also required.
  5. Drivers under 25 may be subject to an additional surcharge, ranging from €8 to €25 per rental day in mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands. In the Canary Islands, the charges may be slightly higher. Also, some car models may be restricted to drivers over 25 years old.

Insurance and Coverage

Typically, basic car rentals include third-party insurance, theft protection, and damage coverage. If you wish to extend your coverage, you can add extra options during the booking process.

The term excess refers to the maximum amount the renter will pay in case of damage to the car. In the event of an accident or negligence, the renter will only pay for the repairs up to the amount of the excess, while the insurance company covers the rest of the repair costs. If you wish to eliminate this excess, you can opt for a small additional fee that will provide full coverage for the rental car.
